    DESCRIPTION:
This auction is for a real nice, rare, and desirable 1938 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM NEW YORK YANKEES at CHICAGO CUBS. Teams played this one at WRIGLEY FIELD. An artistic, beautiful art-Deco program with minimum advertising. Quite beautiful!!
    Program is clean and unscored.
The Lou Gehrig-led Yankees won series 4-0. HOF Manager Joe McCarthy's Yanks won over HOF Manager Gabby Hartnett's Cubs. Hartnett also was catcher. Both teams were loaded with future HOFers. Game 1 scored, Yanks 3-1 Red Ruffing over Bill Lee before 43,642.
Cubs pitcher Dizzy Dean had tried to come back too soon after his 1937 All-Star Game toe injury, favoring the toe and hurting his arm in the process. He had been obtained from the St Louis Cardinals in April 1938, and had won 7 of 8 decisions in the regular season, relying on finesse rather than his now-gone fastball. Dean would give up six earned runs in 8-1/3 innings he pitched and take the loss. His luck ran out in the late innings of Game 2, as Frank Crosetti and Joe DiMaggio hit two-run home runs off Dean in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to send the Cubs to New York down two games to none in the Series.
McCarthy became the first manager to win three consecutive World Series titles. ... Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon led the Yankees with a .400 average. For the Cubs, that made it six straight Series losses. This was Lou Gehrig's last Series as an active player, and last full season before his fatal illness.
